Pocket Cars Checklist

In my collection, all of the U.S.-released vehicles with a copyright year on the chassis were copyrighted between 1974 and 1979, and those blistercards in my collection with copyright years on them were copyrighted from 1974 to 1986 (for details on Pocket Cars blistercards, see the Packaging page).
As some of you know, many of the models were still made after the Pocket Cars market collapsed in the U.S. and appeared in other Tomy and Tomica lines (including different packaging of an easy-to-open box like the old Lesney Matchbox line). [For those of you who are interested, Tomica still makes this size of diecast vehicle which appears in the "HED" line.] Since most of those models were in the same color/sticker/tampo schemes and no changes were made to the body, chassis, or interior, any LOOSE vehicle is completely indistinguishable from the Pocket Cars blisterpacked ones. For example, look at the following pictures of a "Ford P-34 Tyrrell Formula 1 Racer."

Pictures adapted from "zeppan-sonota".
Can you tell which one is the Pocket Cars model in the bottom picture?

Also during the time that Pocket Cars were available in the U.S., there were vehicles/models made that were not released in the U.S. or were not part of the Pocket Cars line. These, too, if loose, cannot be told apart from their Pocket Cars counterparts without some type of reference list. In other words, be extremely careful when acquiring loose vehicles that are claimed to be U.S.-released "Pocket Cars."

Due to the above, and despite very detailed and careful research on my part, it's possible that a few non-U.S.-released vehicles/models are included in the checklist -- and for that I apologize. Of course, once I'm aware of those vehicles, their entry will be deleted and a note will be left.

The difficulty in creating a truly reliable checklist is due to four things.
First -- The vehicle name on the chassis does not always match the vehicle's name printed on the front or back of the blistercard. For example, most "Nissan"-chassis-names have a "Datsun" card-name. In many instances, the way the name is printed on the front is not always the way the vehicle is listed on the back. For example, number 137-14 appears as "Auto Transport" on the front of one card, but is "Auto Transporter" on the back of another card. Added to this is how a vehicle is listed in a U.S. catalog. The catalog-name may be different from the chassis-name, the card-front name, the card-back name, and/or different year cards! Right there, there are four possible name variations for any one vehicle!!
Now, combine all the above and add in any typos and/or spelling errors that appear on the card backs and in the catalogs. These alone can drive any person crazy and also make it rather difficult to know if a vehicle was mispackaged (see the "Honda Utility Vehicle" entry in the Checklist below as an example).
Second -- Several vehicles/models used a generic chassis with multiple numbers. For example, most of the Fuso trucks had "Fuso Truck Series" and "No.7.90.91" on their chassis. The only two ways to know exactly which truck it is is to have either a correctly blisterpacked one or a catalog with captioned pictures and the name correctly spelled.
Third -- The numbering system Tomy used for the Pocket Cars line was not that consistent nor uniform. The only consistency was in the "F" series (and even here there were errors). This series was the Tomy-made diecasts of non-Japanese vehicles like the Cadillac. Since non-Japanese vehicles are foreign to Japan, the Tomy numbering system had an "F" preceding the vehicle number.
Unfortunately, vehicle chassis-numbers were not unique or exclusive to a particular vehicle/model. For example, "18" could be either a Datsun car or a Honda truck; "F18" could be either a Dodge taxi or a Big Rig truck.
Then there are the instances where the card-number is different from the chassis number. For example, the "Airport Ground Service Truck" has a card-number of "99" but a chassis-number of "52.53.54"!
Finally, there are some instances where the same number has a hyphenated suffix that is a completely different make/model/year. NOTE: Rarely did the hyphenated suffix appear on a card.
Fourth -- Assortment numbers for which there is no known listing on the back of a card. This is a little surprising for the 1974 & 1980/81 cards considering the detailed lists on the back (re: assortment number 4514 on the fourth 1974 copyrighted card), but not at all surprising for the 1982 through 1986 cards since none of those had lists.
Related to this is the fact that on most of the 1974 (third through sixth) & 1980/81 cards, the assortment numbers stayed the same but many 'old' models were moved around to different assortment numbers.

As a result, the checklist is arranged alphabetically using a 'descriptive' name. This descriptive name comes from the blistercard, the vehicle chassis, a catalog, or from a combination of the three along with the design on the vehicle itself.

The checklist of known U.S.-released Pocket Cars
has been compiled from the following sources.

1. Collector's Guide to Diecast Toys & Scale Models by Dana Johnson, 1996, pp. 176-180.
Of all the various guides and books I searched through (and believe me when I say that I looked at hundreds of American/English editions!), this was the only one (until recently -- see #2 next) that had any information about Pocket Cars. Unfortunately, several vehicles are listed in different ways resulting in 24 multiple (or 'repeat') entries. Some vehicles have three different entries. For example, a police 'truck' is listed as:

Police Van Special Weapons Team 2, Toyota Type HQ15V
Special Weapons Team Police Van, Toyota Type HQ15V
Toyota Type HQ15V Special Weapons Team Police Van

Additionally, information is missing from some entries. This is not that unusual (even some of my entries in the checklist are missing information, but that's because I don't have the vehicle itself); however, information is missing from entries of vehicles pictured in the book. If you've got the vehicle, then you know the chassis name, the vehicle number (but not its hyphenated form), and the scale. These three data are always present, and if you can photograph the vehicle, I would think that it would be easy to turn it over and get the information -- yet this is some of the missing information in the list. Another minor point is the slight mis-alphabetizing throughout the list, but especially in the "M"s.
This edition has 19 great color pictures and 199 entries (actually, there are 223 listings; but after you subtract the 'repeat' entries mentioned above, you get the 'grand' total of 199). Even with its drawbacks, this book offers a good starting point.
NOTE: A 1998 second edition (pp. 233-236) has no pictures and the entries appear unchanged {I've only seen this book twice}. Given what I've found out about Pocket Cars, the unchanged entries surprised me. In the short time that I did research before seeing this edition, I'd become aware of over 260 vehicles (not including variations!). And the slightly mis-alphabetizing is still there. Personally, I'd pass on this edition.
2. Toy Collector's Guide - Identification and Values for  Diecast  White Metal  Other Automotive Toys & Models by Dana Johnson, 2002, pp. 299-303.
This edition has 39 great color photos and 267 entries. Unfortunately, it suffers from the same 'errors' as #1 above plus another one. There are 21 multiple ('repeat') entries, a minimum of 12 questionable entries {"questionable" because some diecast are of vehicles that did not exist prior to 1986 and some vehicles are listed with a copyright year of 1998!}, and still has trouble with some alphabetizing. Still, there are about 230 informative entries and this edition is a good, updated reference book.
3. Tomica - Japan's Most Popular Diecast Toys by Dana Johnson, 2000.
This 12-page booklet has five-plus pages of Pocket Cars in list form (just like in the books above), four pages of excellent pictures (32 different Pocket Cars), and one page of other Tomica/Tomy vehicles. Though a handy and portable 'volume' with 231 listings, it still suffers from all the same 'errors' as the above mentioned books.
4. Club House Miniature Diecast Models Tomica & Dandy Vol. 26; January 10, 1982.
This glossy Tomica club newsletter (published by Tomica) is about 98% Japanese with very little in English. However, one section is labeled "Pocket Cars 1982." This section has twelve pictures with six models each and captions naming all the vehicles. In combining this data with other information I have (including many of the models pictured and the 1982 catalog mentioned in #5 below), I know that the newsletter shows all 72 models that were released on the 1982-copyrighted card. Though some of the information in the newsletter was used for the checklist below, the majority of data was used to create the list of vehicles on the Lists page.
NOTE: The newsletter is actually poster sized (213/8" x 16") but 'quarter' folded to just under paper size (103/4" x 8").
5. Tomy Corporation Catalogs {U.S. editions/versions}, yearly copyrighted catalogs (1974, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984), various pages.
Got these catalogs from online auctions & friends. The pictures and captions verify the models released (with rare exceptions) that are listed here.
6. The Complete World of Tomy Diecast by Vic Davey & Danny C. Y. Chan, 1997, 222 pp.
This hardbound book, published in Hong Kong, is mostly in Chinese(?) with some portions in English (in fact, other than Johnson's books, this is the only Tomy/Tomica book published that has any English -- all the others are in Japanese only). The book has hundreds of excellent color pictures and I think it is a valuable reference for most Tomy diecast from 1970 till late 1996. The chapters are in both languages and many pictures have English captions; however, the data accompanying the pictures is in Chinese(?). Though there are many typos, misspellings, and grammatical errors, they didn't distract me enough to keep me from finding some information I was looking for. Unfortunately, the word "Complete" in the title is misleading -- there's not one mention, reference, or hint about "Pocket Cars" even though many pictures show models that were in the line.
7. My own collection
I first noticed Pocket Cars when I was looking for Hot Wheels (which I've been collecting since they came out way back in 1968) at a couple of local drugstores (Skaggs and Longs -- anyone remember them?) back in 1980. I don't know if they were available in my area (Phoenix, AZ) before then. After the two drugstores merged (they all became Skaggs), then went out of business around 1985, I could no longer find Pocket Cars and my collection numbered at just over 100 vehicles. It wasn't until the summer of 2000 that I used the "miracle of computers" to explore online to see what I could find out about these neat vehicles. To my surprise, I not only found some information, but I found quite a few Pocket Cars up for auction at several sites. Currently, I have about half of the Pocket Cars that I know were released here in the states. It is from my collection that most of the blisterpack information and most of the vehicle descriptions are from.
Want to know a little bit about me? Visit my 'Profile' page.
8. The InterNet
I prowl the InterNet to see if there is anything new that I don't have or in the way of variations. I mostly tend to visit sites where Pocket Cars are pictured, especially blisterpacked ones.

The Checklist

The entries consist of seven 'parts.'

1. A "[ ]" or "[^]" as a check-off place for you to keep track of the models in your own collection when the list is printed (if you print just "The Checklist" part of this page, it's going to run about 30 pages!). {To do a print-out of anything at this site, see the third section on the Miscellaneous page.}
2. Vehicle name {see last paragraph of second section above}.
3. Model/series number. Some models have multiple numbers; they are separated by a "/" (slash).*
4. Copyright year on vehicle chassis.*
5. Scale size of vehicle (in fraction form; e.g., 1/64) on chassis.*
6. Vehicle description. ‡ *
7. Wheel type/style.* {see Wheel Types section after the checklist or go to Wheel Type Chart page}

* Some of this data may be missing from some entries.
This is due, mainly, to me not having the vehicle in my collection. There are some vehicles on which a generic chassis (with a generic chassis-name) was used that did not have a specific vehicle/model model name. When I've had to rely on other sources, the information may not have been detailed enough in order to get all the data.
‡ For some descriptions, when I've had to rely on other sources, namely some kind of picture, I've indicated this with a "(pic)" at the start of the vehicle description. If there is no "(pic)", it means that I have the vehicle in my collection or that I actually inspected/held the model.

At the end of some descriptions, I've included any other names the vehicle/model was released under that I'm aware of. As of this update, I know of some vehicles/models that have up to four different, or variant, names!

[ ] - Main model/vehicle entry. Main entries are separated by a blank line.
[^] - Variation of preceding [ ] model entry with only the differences listed.
These entries immediately follow the [ ] entry with no blank line in between.
[X] - Generic name on the chassis in which the chassis was used on more than one model.
Italics - Any data {#s 2, 3, 4, 5 above} that hasn't been confirmed or verified
is done in this font, along with some notes.

Wheel Types

The following section (of the 53 different wheel types that I'm currently aware of) uses abbreviations of my own creation followed by a detailed description of that wheel. The descriptions are detailed on purpose in case the details and/or pictures don't appear.
Since I don't have a complete collection of Pocket Cars, I obviously don't have every different wheel type that was done. In a few cases below, I've taken an existing picture and modified it to look like the wheel described. These modified pictures have been notated as such.
There are also a few instances where I don't have a picture or one that can be modified. These have a "No Picture Available" 'box.' I will try to get a picture of a vehicle with those wheels from somewhere for both the modified pictures and for the 'NPA's.
Once an official or standardized list of Wheel Type abbreviations is found, those abbreviations will be added into the descriptions below and on the Wheel Type Chart page only (they will not be added into the Checklist above). Since I know that some "official" lists do not differentiate among the colored hubs, I'm going to leave my created abbreviations as the main reference.
NOTE 1: Nearly half of the wheels are vehicle/model specific. That's probably the reason why there are so many different types.
NOTE 2: Since all the tires are "black plastic," neither the phrase nor the words will be referred to or
used in any of the abbreviations or in the descriptions when describing the tire part.
NOTE 3: I've bolded certain letters & numbers in each description so that you may see
where I devised my abbreviations from.
NOTE 4: The term "treaded" used in some descriptions indicates two types of 'textured' tires.
One type has straight line 'edges' going around the tire on the road-surface area.
These mostly appear on car models.
The second type is 'knobby' (like off-road, heavy duty, and/or construction tires)
and appears mainly on pick-ups, tractors, and construction vehicles.
Though many 'full-face' pictures show the type of tread,
I've included 'thin' pictures of the tires' road-surface.
NOTE 5: I've also included a centimeter {cm} measurement of the wheels' diameter. Though as
accurate as I can make them, the measurements possibly have an error of up to ± 1 cm.
NOTE 6: There are a few vehicles (mostly construction ones) that have tank-like treads.
I have not differentiated among the "treads" themselves, but only among the
'wheels' that let the treads move.
However, the treads are pictured in their entirety.
NOTE 7: A condensed version of this section (minus the detailed descriptions and 'thin' pics)
appears on the Pocket Car Wheel Type Chart page.
